Therapy can come in many forms. In the neurological clinic I went to, therapy was given by all sorts of doctors. From General Practitioners to Psychiatrist, they all came to the hospital to share their insights in an edifying way.
There is an intersection between Biblical principles and psychology as a whole. Many assume that it’s either or, but the knowledge that was given to us proved that there is a kind balance between the two.
As discussed in our previous post, we need to consider the person as a whole – mind, body and spirit. Therefore, all three belong to God. And therefore, God cares about all three.
In therapy, things like mindfulness, sleep cycles, boundaries, neurological pathways, depression as a general subject, medication, anger management, family issues, the cognitive structure and crisis management were discussed.
Firstly, knowledge is a gift from God (Proverbs 2:6). God does not hinder us to be informed. It is not to say that we shouldn’t discern when it is given. But in more ways than one, being informed is a gift. We know that God has given these doctors the gift of knowledge. And their knowledge is passed down to us.
Secondly, we do see many symptoms in the Bible, although they aren’t labeled that way. Elijah had suicidal thoughts, David was depressed and many other symptoms are addressed in the Bible. But regardless, their faith stayed intact. Today, with medical knowledge, we are able to draw a much bigger picture of what is going on when these symptoms arise.
Thirdly, each of these items discussed in a neurological clinic, has its roots in the Bible. Mindfulness, sleep cycles, boundaries, neurological pathways, depression, medication, anger management, family issues, the cognitive structure and crisis management need to be discussed if the Christian desires to have a fruitful life.
When the above isn’t managed well, it could cause a hindrance. The Christian has a battlefield. And that is the mind. Not only does the devil have a piece of the pie, but an unbalanced mentality will definitely affect how a Christian lives their life.
It is better to be informed than to be ignorant in my opinion!
