‘Let your desperation drive you to Christ’ seems like a far fetched phrase, don’t you think? After all, it’s not easy to be desperate. But we have the tendency to try and fix it ourselves. Nevertheless, desperation comes. Especially with you and I. We struggle with mental health conditions. Which ever one you have, take your pick….
Friend, I wish it could be easy to ask for help. Why don’t we? Don’t you think we were destined to receive help from God to carry our burdens? I don’t, for one second, think we can carry this on our own.
That brings me to another ‘farfetched’ phrase: Desperation is a hidden blessing. Bare with me on this one, because I will explain to you what I mean:
Consider the human’s tendency to forget the one true God when things are going well. That’s my story…I forgot the one true God when everything went well for me. The faintest problem came up and I tried to fix it myself. But I wasn’t learning anything. I was just looking out for myself. Dear old me. Then things started to spiral down. At this point I became selfish again. Asking why this was happening to me. Why me, basically. Until I was so deep into my problems that I got stuck. It wasn’t until I was enlightened by the Holy Spirit that everything happens for a reason. If God allows something into your life, He has a purpose for it. My mental health hit rock bottom. But I had hope in God. I figured, it’s time to take out my notebook and say: ‘Okay, God. What do you need me to learn about this trial.” It says in James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” During my trial, which I am in now, I’ve learned that God is my only help. I need to stop depending on myself to fix things. Of course, some of the things God expects us to do for ourselves. But at the end of the day, God is the one who is our Helper. I learned that I have the tendency to ask myself for the solution, instead of going to the Holy Spirit for help first. But I also learned that some things are supposed to be a process. It’s supposed to be an ongoing learning experience. More than this, I learned more about God and His character. I never learned more about His grace then in this process of healing. Yes, I learned about who my God is in my suffering.
I think this is because, in suffering, we are more rid of ourselves. Suffering makes us humble, doesn’t it. This is why desperation is a blessing in disguise. Desperation is that point where we fall on our knees and admit that we can’t do this anymore. When we admit that we are not the best caretakes of our lives.
So, why should we allow this desperation to drive us to Christ? Because He is the only chance we have at survival! Seriously, Christ is the One we should put our trust in. Want to know why I chose Him?
Because He was the one that was able to fill this void inside of me that couldn’t be filled by anything else. Because, when the world had a sickness called sin, He stepped down from glory to save us from ourselves. Sin was the reason for this broken world and sin is the reason why we are broken. Romans 3:23 says for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Sin separated us from God. God made a way for this relationship to be restored. He gave us His one and only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. So Christ willingly hung on the cross and died for our sin. On the third day He rose from the dead proving that He is victorious over sin and death. And this is all because God loved us. John 3:16
If there is anyone I would put my hope and trust in, it would be someone who proved His love for me and dying for me. When I hit rock bottom, I would like Him to be my safety net. He is my safe space.
1 Peter 5:7 says ‘casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. That is enough for me to enable me to let my desperation drive me to Christ!
Yes, desperation isn’t a nice point of your life to be in. And yes, it’s easier to try and fix it ourselves then to trust someone else and be patient. But I have to tell you, it’s worth it! It’s totally worth it!
He is our hope. He is the one who took on the worst pain to save us. If you have never believed in and trusted in Him for your salvation, please reach out to me at blog@livebeyond.co.za. I’m praying that you will take this opportunity to reach out.
